The function of a poster is to inform a reader or viewer of information. Posters can provide information about many different topics such as politics, public announcements, advertisements, community events, etc. Posters are used not only to inform but also to persuade and motivate viewer to buy the product on the poster or go to the attraction on the poster or do what the poster is trying to get them to do. Posters are made to maximize the information that the viewer gets in a small amount of time.

A good poster attracts attention from people walking by. It will get them to stop and look at the poster. After someone stops to look at the poster the poster needs to establish a connection with them to keep their interest.

General Demands

A poster needs to be legible, understandable, and interesting. It needs to contain information that may be important to the viewer. A poster needs to be simple and readable. A poster should be large and attention grabbing. A poster should be easy to recognize and remember.

Lettering

A poster should have good positioning of the text and use text hierarchy. The text on a poster should be legible, especial from far away. The text should also be easy to to the point and easy to read. The text style should match the style of the poster. 


Shapes

Shapes in a poster should help show the main point of the poster. Shapes should be large and not too intricate. Shapes should be interesting and attention grabbing but not overpower the message of the poster. Shapes, along with colors, can be used to separate information and to guide the viewers’ eyes. There are many different design techniques that can be used to create a good poster that matches the meaning and style of the poster. 

Colors 

Colors in posters should match the overall style and message of the poster. Colors can be used as symbols in a poster. Color can be used to capture the attention of the viewers. Colors, along with shapes, can be used to separate information and guide the viewers’ eyes.
